MRSA (Staphylococcus aureus), is a specific staph bacteria that is particularly resistant to antibiotics. MRSA has been making headlines lately as a deadly infectious disease emerging from health care settings into the community and has become especially prevalent in sport venues. One of the main reasons for athletes’ susceptibility is that sweat softens skin and impairs its main barrier – the stratum corneum. Athletic equipment obstructs the skin, creating a warm, moist environment for bacteria growth. Skin-to-skin and equipment-to-skin contact among athletes can promote rapid spreading of bacteria. In turn, this super bug is traveling throughout the school on light switches, in cafeterias and weight rooms, on buses, and in the classrooms and locker rooms.
The Centers for Disease Control has been researching MRSA and has issued warnings about the need for regular cleaning of sports equipment and facilities such as locker rooms and other common areas. However, just cleaning isn’t enough!
The professionals at GearClean employ a two step process in battling MRSA and other dangerous bacteria. First, we thoroughly disinfect the target areas in the facility utilizing our exclusive cleaner, sanitizer and deodorizer. This product is registered by the EPA as a germ killer and fungicide and is authorized for use in food preparation areas. It is specially formulated for compatibility with our mPale Antimicrobial.
Our second step is the application of a long lasting antimicrobial coating to the target areas. The beauty of the mPale Antimicrobial is that it controls microorganisms without chemical poisons. Instead, it relies on electrically charged particles that have a unique spiked molecular structure. In nature, most microbes carry the opposite electrical charge–so they are physically and irresistibly drawn into contact with mPale’s pointed molecules. The physical contact punctures the cell walls of the offending microbes. These molecular spikes are undetectable to human touch, but more than a match for single-cell organisms. The mPale is involatile, insoluble and non-leaching so, with proper care, the treatment should last for the life of the treated surface.
The active ingredient in the mPale Antimicrobial forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer, which chemically bonds to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the quaternary amine sword punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobial doesn’t lose strength and the sword is ready for the next cell to contact it. Normal cleaning of treated surfaces is necessary to prevent build up of dirt, dead microbes, etc. which could cover the treatment, prohibiting it from killing microorganisms.
As a premier affiliate of mPact Environmental Solutions of Fountain Inn, SC, GearClean is trained, licensed and authorized to employ the mPale technology.
